New Ways of Working

What is New Ways of Working (NWW) / Flexible Working?

New ways of working (flexible working) breaks away from the traditional concept of work always taking place at a fixed time and in a fixed location. Many organisations have adopted some aspects of flexible working or new ways of working, for instance the use of flexi-time. Forward looking organisations can however take the concept much further by taking advantage of technology to allow staff to work wherever and whenever is most effective and therefore to improve the utilisation of expensive staff and accommodation.

New Ways of Working including desk sharing, home working and mobile working are being increasingly adopted by organisations both in the public and private sectors, such as Ealing Council, Surrey County Council, BBC, OGC, DTI, KPMG, Ernst and Young, Vodafone and Sun Microsystems. It incorporates moving to a greater variety and flexibility in working patterns, which is enabled by changes in technology. Work is no longer necessarily restricted to a specific desk but can take place for instance at a touchdown location in the office, at home, at satellite touchdown locations or out on site with the customer. Some of the key components of flexible working strategies are:

  • Mobile working
  • Remote working
  • Home working
  • Hot desking (hot-desking) or hotelling
  • Touchdown (touch down)
  • Flexible office arrangements

The Business Case for New Ways of Working

The business case for new ways of working can be strong. Key points include:

  • The extensive accommodation savings that are dependent on reductions in the workstation to staff ratio (that is based on increased NWW)
  • The potential service delivery  benefits in terms of increased efficiency and productivity
  • The potential benefits in terms of enhanced staff morale and retention
  • Flexibility to adjust quickly to the changing business demands for more workstations
  • The potential benefits to the environment, for instance arising from a reduced need for commuting
