Do you really need to move to a new office?

Moving offices is an expensive business – causing disruption not only for you but usually for your customers as well. Often the move is caused by company expansion, and the inability to cram in any more desks without either compromising health and safety or putting staff into unacceptable conditions.

However there are often ways in which you can stay in your existing premises and improve the conditions for staff at a much lower cost than moving. Some of the possibilities are:

  • Getting rid of most cellular offices (but making sure there are sufficient meeting rooms)
  • Replacing L-shaped desks with straight desks, and VDUs with flat screen monitors
  • Replacing large filing areas with high density roller racking
  • Reducing the ratio of desks to staff to 9:10 or 8:10

Often the above can be done with minimal disruption to day to day work. Actium Consult recently managed a programme where a 200,000 sq ft building was internally re-engineered to seat 50% more staff in better conditions, while it remained occupied. The cost saving was over £1 million per annum.

We have produced some interesting research on 'Making better use of your office space' and also our own Interactive Space Model which will help you to review your existing accommodation.

Of course sometimes you have to move, and that also takes a lot of planning, click here for more information on moves strategy and our moves planning experience.
